Transforming Lives and Communities: Our Impact in Jamao

Source: Pisa 2018

Needs

According to the 2018 PISA achievement test given in 79 countries worldwide the Dominican Republic ranks last or second to last in reading and math achievement.

Our experience at Strength for the Journey supports these dismal results.  In 2022, we worked in public schools throughout Jamao tutoring children between 9 – 13 years old- children who, although had been in schools since age 6, had still not learned to read.  Likewise, Strength for the Journey held math classes for children struggling to do simple math.

Economically, families in Jamao also suffer.  The average family wage for children enrolled in Strength for the Journey is between US $200-$300 per month.  There is no potable water in the Dominican Republic.  All water to be consumed must be purchased in bottles.  Electricity is intermittent, with daily outages.  Some of our communities have no cell phone signal or Internet.  Many roads are unpaved.  Few people own cars.  Travel is by motor scooter taxi, burro, horse, or on foot. The needs are great.

Results

  • After our first year of operation as a preschool, children in the Colegio Strength for the Journey are already academically one year ahead of their counterparts in other local public and private preschools.
  • Our leadership students planned, implemented, and evaluated 9 service projects in the community of Jamao
  • Students from various Jamao communities who participated in our reading tutoring for one year gained an average of 4-5 reading levels.
