Empowering Through Education: Our Journey to Transform Lives
Our Humble Beginnings
Strength for the Journey formed in 2010 as a small group of 8 women interested in hands-on philanthropy in some of the world’s most challenged communities. As we worked, we learned and transformed. Our lessons taught us that education is the one element, something permanent, that can create capacities for the poor to emerge from poverty.
Over the years, we grew into a committed group composed of two non-profits, Strength for the Journey, DR INC in the United States and Asociación Strength for the Journey in the Dominican Republic. Each legal non-profit has its own separate board of directors. In the US, we also benefit from an active advisory committee of 20 women and more than 250 members and supporters.
Our Mission
is to provide a safe, nurturing environment that fulfills social, emotional, and academic needs and builds problem solving and leadership skills that equip children and youth to emerge from poverty.
We Believe
Education is the only true path out of poverty
Problem solving abilities and life skills are critical to future success
Children must take responsibility for their own learning, growth, life goals, and path to
success
Providing help without developing dependence builds strength
How We Help
Finding and implementing solutions to local poverty is no easy task. Strength for the Journey integrates our work with other local non-profits, local, national, and international institutions. We consult with others prior to implementing new programs and activities to verify that we are not duplicating needs that other groups work to fulfill. While we share our knowledge and skills with local leaders and non-profits, we also seek advice from them when needed. By working closely with children, families, and community, together, we can make change
Most important, we provide hands-on help, offering classes to meet educational needs and engaging the most effective teaching methods, typically those not used in local public schools. We make classes fun, interesting, and challenging. Children and older students must follow rules and be accountable. Even the younger ones take responsibility to be on time, provide excuses when they cannot attend class, and be kind, helpful, and considerate of their classmates.
For us at Strength for the Journey, this is a winning formula!
