Unlocking Potential Through Education and Empowerment
is to provide a safe, nurturing environment that fulfills social, emotional, and academic needs and builds problem solving and leadership skills that equip children and youth to emerge from poverty.
We Believe
Education is the only true path out of poverty
Problem solving abilities and life skills are critical to future success
Children must take responsibility for their own learning, growth, life goals, and path to
success
Providing help without developing dependence builds strength
How We Help
Finding and implementing solutions to local poverty is no easy task. Strength for the Journey integrates our work with other local non-profits, local, national, and international institutions. We consult with others prior to implementing new programs and activities to verify that we are not duplicating needs that other groups work to fulfill. While we share our knowledge and skills with local leaders and non-profits, we also seek advice from them when needed. By working closely with children, families, and community, together, we can make change
Strength for the Journey nurtures early childhood development using the High Scope model for 30 preschoolers and kindergarteners in our Jamao learning center, currently pursuing accreditation with the Dominican Republic Ministry of Education.
Strength for the Journey Leadership Academy engages public school children in after-school sessions, fostering values like organization, planning, and compassion through interactive lessons, while older students, having attended for up to 7 years, take on leadership roles by initiating monthly community service projects.
Strength for the Journey provides free summer reading tutoring for public school children aged 9-13, addressing illiteracy through small-group sessions, alongside engaging math classes using games like Yahtzee and bingo, as well as a basketball camp.
Children cannot learn if their basic needs are not met. Thus, at various times during the year Strength for the Journey travels to other Jamao small mountain communities to donate clothing, shoes, and/or food to the poor.
During summer months, Strength for the Journey offers parenting classes to our preschool parents. In these classes, parents learn discipline skills, how to support their child’s education, how to read to their child when they, themselves, are illiterate, and how to talk with their child to develop language skills.
